With Manchester United’s injury list piling up, 17-year-old Mason Greenwood could start against Arsenal on Monday night.
The teenager doesn’t turn 18 until the following day and has starred for the Red Devils in both the Europa League (vs Astana) and in the EFL Cup (vs Rochdale) already this month.
United have been without Anthony Martial since their 2-1 home defeat by Crystal Palace back in August, whilst Marcus Rashford picked up a thigh injury in last weekend’s defeat at West Ham United.
Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez are both capable of playing the striker’s role but are out on loan in Italy with Serie A league leaders Internazionale.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have won just two of their first six matches to start the 2019-20 Premier League season and start the weekend in eighth place, three points behind Monday’s opponents Arsenal, who occupy the final Champions League spot.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the United boss hinted that Mason Greenwood could start against the Gunners, saying:
“We can’t just throw him in at the deep end all the time. We’ve managed him. But he’s proved in those games [against Astana and Rochdale] that he’s ready for it.
“Now it’s the Premier League. I’ll have the weekend to think about it.”
Paul Pogba faced Rochdale midweek but remains a doubt to start on Monday night, whilst defenders Luke Shaw, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Diogo Dalot are all ruled out indefinitely.
