After finishing the season so terribly last year, it looks like Chelsea want to get back on the track and are making the right moves in the transfer market.
First, the ‘Blues’ signed Italian coach Antonio Conte, known for his determination and passion, and then, right after the appointment of Conte, Chelsea started their summer signings. The first one was the promising striker Batshuayi from Marseille and yesterday Chelsea completed the signing of N’Golo Kante from Leicester City. However, it looks like that is not all.
While the English media claim that Chelsea wants to sign Riyad Mahrez from Leicester City, reports in Spain have other opinions. The Spanish newspaper Marca (via CSAR) claim that Juventus and Chelsea have made ‘formal proposals’ in order to sign Andre Gomes, the Portuguese midfielder who was part of the Portugal team who won EURO 2016 in France this year.
Gomes had a great season with Valencia last year and his price tag has increased a lot during this transfer window. In the beginning of the summer, the media talk was all about him going to Manchester United, but it looks like United are more interested in signing Pogba now. According to the reports, Chelsea’s bid for the midfielder came in the last few days. For their part, Valencia want €65 million or £54.2m for the player: an amount of money that Chelsea are willing to pay.
As for now, Chelsea’s offer seems to be only a ‘formal proposal’; whether that means the bid is official or an unofficial enquiry is what remains unclear.
Should Gomes sign for Chelsea, he is likely to be regarded as a potential replacement for Oscar, who seems to have fallen totally out of favour at Chelsea.
