By May or June of every year, the media is often awash with reports linking clubs to the signing of one player or another. This often intensifies once it is July and continues until the first two to three days of September. Many of these media outlets are either merely guessing or simply putting out stories in order to earn some money through advertising.
However, when media outlets such as Sky Sports, BBC and The Times (although, it must be said that even the Times are not 100% reliable) put out stories, they are doing it because they have been reliably informed. This is why Arsenal fans have reason to be cheerful this afternoon as, according to Sky Italia ( via goal.com), a sister company of the Sky Sports group, Argentina and Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi is set to jet into London to hold talks with Arsenal in regard to a move to the Emirates this summer.
Goal.com reckons the player has a release clause of €94 million, but Inter may be willing to let him leave this summer if an offer in the region of €50-€70m is received by any of the interested clubs.
Arsenal have been linked in the last few days to the signing of Gonzalo Higuain, but it appears Napoli are not ready to lower their demands. The Naples-based club are set to be demanding as much as £79 million for the former Real Madrid star, hence Arsenal are considering their options.
The 23-year-old Icardi has recently been linked with a move to West Ham but, as the Hammers do not have the lure of Champions League football to attract him to the Wembley stadium, Arsenal will feel they have a good chance of signing the Inter Milan man.
Icardi scored 16 goals in 34 games in all competition for Milan last season. This is despite the fact that he struggled with his form at the beginning of the season and was playing in a league that is known to be as defensive as the Serie A. In contrast, Morata scored 7 goals in the same Serie A last season, although he played fewer games: 27.
