According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sign Newcastle United forward Georginio Wijnaldum before the transfer window closes on September 3. However, Spurs have so far failed to match his £25m valuation.
The Dutchman completed a £14.5million switch to the English side Newcastle from Dutch club PSV Eindhoven last season and enjoyed an impressive first season in English football. He found the back of the net 11 times and provided 5 assists in 38 matches for Newcastle last season.
This was despite the fact that he was played in various positions, which must have greatly affected his game. He was at one stage deployed in the left back position when Newcastle’s defenders were injured. Imagine if he was played in one position for the whole season. He probably would have done better.
Despite his brilliant debut season last term, the 25-year-old could not prevent Newcastle from getting relegated to the second tier of English football. Wijnaldum is one of the stars expected to leave the St James Park this summer.
And due to his quality, he is not lacking in suitors as British tabloid The Mirror earlier this week reported that Merseyside clubs Liverpool and Everton had joined Spurs in the race to secure the services of Wijnaldum.
But with both Everton and Liverpool not playing in the Champions League next season, Tottenham will feel they surely have a chance of beating the duo to the signing of the Dutchman.
Everton may be able to offer more money due to having a new and rich owner, but Wijnaldum could prefer Tottenham due to the opportunity of playing in the Champions league, something he is yet to do in his career.
