Last season when Matic was off form, Chelsea struggled and it has always been the case even before last season. That Chelsea needs another midfielder that is equally as good as Matic is an understatement.
Mikel is good, unfortunately not good enough for a side that wants to win the Premier league title hence most Chelsea fans have been calling for the club to sign a midfielder in the mould of Matic or even better.
And if you believe reports in the press this afternoon, Chelsea is reportedly on the verge of signing Leicester City midfielder N’Golo Kante. Reports from France claim Chelsea have already agreed a fee with Leicester City for €35m. Which although could be way off the mark, we still believe there is no smoke without fire especially with the likes of Daily mirror, Daily mail, Metro and others running with similar stories. Certainly someone must have leaked the news to the press?
The Blues according to Daily Mail and various other media outlets have offered the player £100,000 a week wage package to push through the deal. The Leicester ace has been heavily linked with lot of clubs this summer transfer window which is not a surprise, as he was key as Leicester City emerged surprise winners of the Premier League last season. Aside Chelsea, Kante has also been linked with Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United.
Leicester City thought to be willing to keep hold of the French man, but with Kante having a release clause of €25m in his contract, the King Power club might just be fighting a losing battle. Unless off course if the player wants to stay as was the case with Jamie Vardy.
Daily mail claim Kante is set to sign a five-year deal with Antonio Conte tutored Chelsea and Chelsea are confident they can get a deal done for £30 million which tallies with the €35m the French media are reporting. It is however unclear why Chelsea would be willing to pay more than the midfielder’s release clause. Why should they pay €35m when he has a release clause of €25m?
The Blues under new boss Antonio Conte is in the rebuilding process, after a disastrous season last term, that saw Chelsea perform woefully in the first half of the season which led to them missing out on the Champions League places.
Should Chelsea manage to sign Kante, manage to keep the core of the current team together and sort their defensive problems coupled with the signing of Michy Batshuayi from Marseille, Chelsea will surely be one of the favorites for the title next season.
