Steven Nzonzi leaves Stoke City for Sevilla

Stoke City have sold midfielder Steven Nzonzi to La Liga side Sevilla for a club record fee of £7 million. The previous record was £4.5 million received by the club for selling Tuncay to Wolfsburg in 2011.

The Spanish club, who finished fifth in La Liga in the 2014-15 season, have signed Nzonzi on a four-year deal which includes a £21.5 million buyout clause.

Nzonzi has expressed his desire to leave the Britannia Stadium for the past two summers. However, up until the Frenchman’s deal with Sevilla, manager Mark Hughes had convinced him to stay.

Hughes admitted this summer, “We worked really hard to persuade him his future lay here but it didn’t seem to be enough for him.”

The 26-year-old joined Stoke from Blackburn Rovers in 2012 for £3 million and has since made 120 appearances for the club. He made 42 appearances in all competitions in the 2014-15 season as Stoke finished ninth in the Premier League.

Nzonzi arrived in Seville on Wednesday night and completed a medical Thursday morning, according to a statement from the Europa League winners.
