Sunderland have confirmed through their website that Dick Advocaat will continue as head coach for another season.
This comes as a bit of a surprise as Advocaat stated at the end of the season that he planned to quit due to personal reasons. Evidently not.
He was speaking about his return:
It was a great feeling to be part of Sunderland in the last few months, the experience was something very special and after talking with Lee, Ellis and of course my family, we all agree it is the right decision.
Elis Short, the Sunderland chairman said:
Dick’s credentials in football are top class and we saw what an impact his vast knowledge and experience had on our team and the club as a whole in just two months. Sunderland fans took him to their hearts and so did everyone at the club, so we are absolutely thrilled that he will be here longer term
Paul Clement, Sean Dyche and Bernd Schuster were all considered for the job before Advocaat agreed to extend his contract.
Sunderland fans will surely be thrilled with Advocaat at the helm, as he performed a great escape towards the end of the season to avoid relegation with 12 points gained in their last possible 27.
