Chelsea draw ensures Manchester United’s Champions League spot

Chelsea’s staunch defense stood tall once again today at Stamford Bridge as a 1-1 draw effectively denied Liverpool a chance at Champions League football next season.

John Terry put Jose Mourinho’s side ahead before Steven Gerrard scored a header just before half-time to equalize for the Reds.

Although it seemed out of the question at the start of the season, a great run of form in the new year saw Liverpool back in contention for a top four spot.

Defeats to Arsenal and Manchester United however, were a blow for Brendan Rodgers’ side but there was still hope, especially with United suffering a blip recently.

Although they still can mathematically make it, their 1-1 draw with Chelsea has all but ended any hopes of a second consecutive season of Champions League football.

United’s win yesterday at Crystal Palace also makes things hard and unless Liverpool dramatically improve their goal difference and hope that Louis van Gaal’s side fail to win their last two games, it looks like Europa League football beckons for Anfield again.
